9 June 2022 - GlobalMet visits MARINA STCW Office in Manila

As part of our activities to encourage cross-industry cooperation, GlobalMET held a meeting with key personnel from the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) in Manila, the Philippines in early June, 2022.

GlobalMET Chairman Capt. Pradeep Chawla interacted with key government personnel involved in the supervision of maritime education and training activities in the Philippines. They discussed matters of mutual interest related to maritime education and training. The need for MET to embrace digital learning solutions and methodologies to keep pace with the unique learning styles of the present and future generations of young seafarers was highlighted.

25 May 2022 - GlobalMET is now part of the IMO Correspondence Group on Life Saving Appliances (LSA CG)

GlobalMET has been made part of the IMO Correspondence Group on Life Saving Appliances (LSA CG). Over the next few months, the correspondence group will be discussing various proposals regarding regulations for lifesaving appliances on ships. Members are invited to send their inputs to Capt. 15 May 2022 - GlobalMET meets IMU Vice Chancellor, Ex IRI COO and MASSA CEO

As part of GlobalMET’s efforts to interact with leading decision makers from different parts of the maritime sector, GlobalMET Chairman Capt. Pradeep Chawla (Managing Director - Group QHSE & Training, Anglo Eastern Ship Management ) met with Dr. Malini V. Shankar (Vice Chancellor, Indian Maritime University (IMU), IAS (Retd.)), Mr. John Ramage (Ex Chief operating officer, International Registries, Inc (IRI) and its affiliates, who provide administrative and technical support to the Republic of the Marshall Islands Registry (RMI)) and Capt Shivanand Halbe (CEO, Maritime Association of Shipowners Shipmanagers and Agents (MASSA)) in Mumbai, India. They discussed current issues facing shipping and ways in which maritime education and training can be improved to address these issues.

30 April 2022 - GlobalMET attends MSC 105

GlobalMET attended the 105th session of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) from 20 to 29 April 2022. During the nearly two week session, a number of pertinent matters were discussed. This included safety and security in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, amendments related to GMDSS, amendments to IMDG and IMSBC codes, domestic ferry model regulations, maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS) and lithium battery fires on ships. 9 April 2022 - GlobalMET Chairman visits IMO

GlobalMET Chairman, Capt. Pradeep Chawla visited the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on 9th April 2022. Discussions related to maritime education training were held with the following:

8 April 2022 - GlobalMET attends IMO PPR 9

GlobalMET attended the 9th session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 9). The meeting was held from Monday, 4 April to Friday, 8 April 2022. Draft ammendments to MARPOL Annex V regarding garbage record books on smaller ships (100 to 400 gross tons) were agreed upon. Issues related to the transport of plastic pellets, highlighted in the X-press Pearl incident of May 2021 were discussed. The marking of fishing gear, Arctic protection and guidance for the discharge of water of exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) were also deliberated upon. 7 April 2022 - GlobalMET completes shifting its base to Hong Kong

GlobalMET has completed the formalities for shifting its base from Australia to Hong Kong. This will help it be closer to its members, with greater interaction with members. The decision to shift was taken by the Board of Directors in 2021. The process was commenced in 2021 and was completed in April 2022, with a press release in Splash 247. GlobalMET was formed in 1989 by a group of maritime education and training (MET) institutions with a mission to work together and help improve MET standards around the world.

31 March 2022 - GlobalMET is part of the IMO HTW 8 Correspondence Group on Maritime Training

GlobalMET has been confirmed as a member of the IMO Correspondence Group on Maritime Training. This group has been formed as instructed by the Chair of HTW 8 Sub-Committee and will work as per the CG working plan over the next few months. Its scope will include the development of provisions directly influencing the quality of the on-board training. Capt. Sriram and Capt. Vinayak will be representing GlobalMET in the Correspondence Group.

Members who wish to contribute to the deliberations of the WG are welcome to send their inputs to Capt. Sriram Rajagopal and Capt. Vinayak Mohla.

28 March 2022 - GlobalMET attends IMO ISWG – GHG 11

GlobalMET represented its members at the IMO meetings for the Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships (ISWG-GHG 11), which met 14-18 March 2022. The Working Group discussed different short and long term methods to address issues related to the reduction of GHG emissions from ships including the use of alternative fuels. Capt. Sriram Rajagopal (Head of Outreach Activities, GlobalMET) attended the ISWG-GHG11 meetings on behalf of GlobalMET.

20 March 2022 - GlobalMET is appointed as the review group Coordinator for revised model course 1.35

GlobalMET (represented by Capt. Vinayak Mohla) has been confirmed as the review group Coordinator for revised model course 1.35 on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) tanker cargo and ballast handling simulator. This was announced in HTW 8/16.

19 March 2022 - GlobalMET is part of the review group on revised model course 1.32 (IBS including INS)

GlobalMET, represented by Capt. Vinayak Mohla and Capt. Sriram Rajagopal, has been confirmed as part of the review group on revised IMO model course 1.32 on operational use of integrated bridge systems including integrated navigational systems.

5 March 2022 - GlobalMET attends IMO SSE 8

GlobalMET represented its members at the 8th session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE). The meeting was held from 28 February to 4 March 2022. A revision of IMO model course 3.03 (survey of machinery installations) was initiated. Draft new ventilation requirements for lifeboats and liferafts, and draft new guidelines for the design, construction, installation, testing, maintenance and operation of lifting appliances and anchor handling winches were agreed upon. Progress continued to be made on the new mandatory requirements to minimize the incidence and consequences of fires on ro-ro passenger ships, and on the work to improve the safety of commercial diving operations.

12 February 2022 - GlobalMET attends IMO HTW 8

GlobalMET attended the 8th session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW), held from 7-11 February 2022. A number of discussions took place during the meeting, and GlobalMET was able to put forth the views of its members in them.

GlobalMET has volunteered to be part of the relevant working groups that will review certain model courses and the correspondence group on maritime training.

22 January 2022 - GlobalMET attends IMO SDC 8

GlobalMET attended the 8th session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction, held from 17-21 January 2022. Details of the discussions that took place can be found in the report published in the GlobalMET Newsletter.

29 Sep 2021 – GlobalMET participates in ThaiMET webinar

GlobalMET participated in a webinar that was held by Thai Maritime Education and Training Association (ThaiMET) on 29 September 2021. The webinar included presentations by various prominent maritime entities including representatives from ship owners, ship managers, training institutions and other maritime associations. GlobalMET was represented by Capt. Pradeep Chawla who spoke on “Competencies and learning methodologies for the future”.

The focus of the presentation was to explore how maritime education and training can use new technologies to help improve seafarer competencies. Experiences of using these were discussed. The role that cross organizational collaborations can play in overcoming current issues was emphasized. The use of auto intelligent routine, just in time (JIT) arrivals, augmented reality, apps, interactive goggles with real imagery to help familiarize new recruits with parts of a ship and live machinery data were some topics that were explored.

Other speakers included Capt. Maneesh Varma (The Nautical Institute), Capt. Sarabjit Singh Butalia (IMO Ambassador), Capt. Sutep Tranantasin (RCL), Capt. M.P.Bhasin (MASSA), Mr. Andrew Airey (Highlands maritime), Capt. W.Rammaroeng (CTI) and Capt. C.Thansuvan (ThaiMET).

8th September 2021 – GlobalMET supported the WISTA - ICS HK Webinar Click here to read more

On 8th September 2021, a webinar jointly organized by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers Hong Kong and WISTA Hong Kong was supported by GlobalMET. Legal and practical aspects related to the validity of Notice of Readiness (NOR) and the commencement of laytime were discussed by experts from the maritime sector.

22 July 2021

In July 2021, GlobalMET supported two industry events, the first being related to Master Pilot navigation issues and the second related to the relationship between ship-owners and ship-managers. Titled “Shipowners and shipmanagers – experiences with SHIPMAN”, the webinar was conducted by Mr. Jagmeet Makkar FICS, a maritime arbitrator with more than 39 years of maritime experience. It identified different contractual requirements and aspects of the SHIPMAN agreement. The session was garnished with practical examples from Mr. Makkar’s experience and was organized by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (Hong Kong branch).

17 July 2021

In July 2021, GlobalMET supported the industry event “Revisiting roles and responsibilities of Pilots and Masters - a need of the industry”. The webinar was conducted by Mr. Jagmeet Makkar FICS, a maritime arbitrator with more than 39 years of maritime experience. The program explored various operational and legal aspects of the relationship between the Master and Pilot, citing maritime incidents to illustrate them. The event was organized by AMICIE.

16 June 2021

In June 2021, GlobalMET supported the industry event “Safe Port – Eastern City to Ocean Victory and beyond?”. The webinar was part of the “Charter party disputes and prevention – practical considerations” series of lectures organized by Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (Hong Kong branch) and WISTA Hong Kong. It was conducted by Mr. Jagmeet Makkar, FICS, MSc (Cass), PCBA, FICS, FRINA, FIMarE (I), MCIArb., a maritime arbitrator with more than 39 years of maritime experience in all aspects of shipping. The program discussed the safe port definition as per Leeds Shipping v Société Française Bunge (the EASTERN CITY) [1958] 2 Lloyd’s Rep. 127, the more recent Court of Appeal judgement in OCEAN VICTORY [2015] 1 Lloyd’s Rep. 381 and various cases in between.

8 April 2021

In April 2021, GlobalMET supported the industry event “Is there more to a contract than meets the eye?”. The webinar was conducted by Mr. Jagmeet Makkar FICS, a maritime arbitrator with more than 39 years of maritime experience. The program discussed commercial aspects of maritime contracts, legal requirements and established case law. The event was organized by London Maritime Arbitrators Association and Institute of Charterered Shipbrokers (Hong Kong branch).

February 2021 – GlobalMET at IMO HTW 7

From 15 to 19 February 2021, GlobalMET attended the 7th session of the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW 7). The meetings were conducted remotely this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic with nearly 300 members participating in them. GlobalMET is a member of several IMO working groups. August 2020 – GlobalMET supported Nautical Institute Intercargo book “A Guide to Bulk carrier Operations” released.

The Nautical Institute and INTERCARGO publication “A guide to bulk carrier operations” was launched on 26 August 2020. Five chapters of this book were authored by through GlobalMET by its members. GlobalMET was involved in the compiling and writing of this book for three years. You can read more about this by visiting The Nutical Institue webpage on this book.

February 2020

The world began to be gradually affected by COVID-19 and so was the maritime sector. This prevented many earlier planned conferences from being held in person and some had to be cancelled in view of travel restrictions and in the interest of everyone’s health. However, we were able to carry out and attend some events remotely and our members were able to undertake some activities within the given limitations. September 2019 – IMO ISWG MASS1

June 2019 – MSC 101

GlobalMET News update – 10 November 2017

2017 annual conference held in Mumbai

The GlobalMET annual conference for 2017 was held in Mumbai, India on 3^rd and 4^th November 2017. With more than 20 speakers from a wide range of organizations including IMO, US Coast Guard, Directorate general of Shipping, Dalian Maritime University and WISTA, the conference was a resounding success. It was attended by more than 100 delegates including GlobalMET members from around the world. It included panel discussing with various personalities from the world of shipping and maritime training.

GlobalMET News – 4 September 2017

In response to feedback from our members, GlobalMET revamped its website www.globalmet.org in September 2017. The new website is easy to navigate, contains more updated information on our current and future activities and has an extensive photo gallery. In view of our work at IMO, We have dedicated an entire page to our work at the IMO and HTW sub committees. The new website has been made by Core Competency Marine Training Pvt Ltd, a company with more than a decade of experience in the maritime sector.
